Human first, therapist second.

This is a phrase often used in the therapy world and is an important one too. One of the key parts of therapy is showing your “human side”, which develops trust and connection needed for a therapeutic relationship. This connection is at the core of all therapeutic work and provides a non-judgemental base to work from.

Showing up authentically in both my personal and professional life is a value I hold close. In bringing my authentic self to the therapy room, along with a safe, secure space, I hope that you are able to do the same.

Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous.
— Roald Dahl (Matilda)

Therapy style and values.

I use an integrative approach, mostly a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), person-centred theory and attachment theory. This means I use a blend of psychological theories and can tailor work to you. As every person is different and handles situations differently, I am able to work using a unique collaboration of both theory and practice.

There are three main qualities I use in my therapy style, which are also known as the “core conditions” from person-centred therapy:

  • Empathy - We all have our own perception of the world. In therapy, I will try to understand your thoughts and feelings from your perspective.

  • Congruence - Similar to “Human first, therapist second”, to be congruent is to be genuine and real.

  • Unconditional positive regard (UPR) - This is about providing a safe space for clients to talk, without feeling ashamed or judged. You are welcome to come as you are.

I care deeply for my clients and uphold, the BACP ethical framework throughout my work. More information about the principles I uphold in my practice can be found on the BACP website.

I am a fully qualified therapist, gaining a MSc Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy degree and I have a BA Education with Psychology and Counselling, both distinction/first class honours. As part of being an Accredited Registered Member (also known as MBACP, Accred) of the BACP, I complete regular CPD training.
